To many Finns the name of Jarmo Nikku is familiar from a lot of rock and pop music of the 80s and 90s, such as Mikko Kuustonen and Hector, but the beginning of his musical career was something else entirely. His first band Farout was formed in 1977 after the bunch of teenage friends saw Camel live in Finland. The late 70s were a difficult time for progressive rock, and many great albums dropped out of the public eye quickly and sold poorly as punk rock was taking over. Such fate befell Farout as well, and their first album Further Out, released on Kompass Records in 1979, sold only 500 and no more were ever pressed – until now.

Further Out is a lively jazz fusion prog album. Entirely instrumental, Farout’s influences apart from Camel were fusion stars such as Jean-Luc Ponty and Billy Cobham and guitar wizards like Jeff Beck and Al DiMeola. Further Out has stood the test of time extremely well – production is crisp and the tunes are ripe with excellent musicianship. The Svart edition of Farout’s Further out has the original cover art expanded to gatefold format and includes an insert with many unreleased photos from Jarmo Nikku’s personal files. With new liner notes and an interview with Nikku.
